The Open Space is delighted to welcome back three of our most cherished exponents of Indian classical music for a very special concert this July.
Bound by friendship since childhood and shaped by the sacred musical lineage of Varanasi, Sangeet Mishra and Vinod Prasanna return to share an evening steeped in the timeless beauty of Hindustani classical tradition, joined by the brilliant tabla artist Pranav Ramji. Together, these three exceptional musicians invite us into a rich and immersive sound world where melody, rhythm, and emotion unfold in deep conversation.
Both sons of one of India’s great musical cities, Sangeet and Vinod carry within their artistry the fragrance of the ghats, the temple bells at dusk, and the ancient river of sound that has flowed through generations. While Sangeet now resides in Mumbai and Vinod has made Melbourne his home, their shared roots continue to resonate through every phrase they create together.
At the heart of the evening lies the exquisite dialogue between sarangi and bansuri. Sangeet Mishra’s sarangi, carved from a single block of wood and renowned for its uncanny resemblance to the human voice, evokes profound longing, devotion, and transcendence. As an eighth-generation musician of the legendary Mishra family of the Banaras Gharana, he brings an extraordinary lineage and depth of expression to every note.
Interwoven with this is the luminous breath of Vinod Prasanna’s bansuri, the ancient bamboo flute forever linked with the divine music of Lord Krishna. In Vinod’s hands, breath becomes prayer, and melody takes wing—rising, circling, and returning with grace and serenity. A master performer, recording artist, teacher, craftsman, and ambassador of the bansuri, Vinod’s artistry brings both refinement and spontaneity to the ensemble.
Completing this luminous musical conversation is Pranav Ramji on tabla, whose rhythmic mastery provides pulse, propulsion, and intricate response. Having trained from the age of eight under the guidance of Ustad Gulfam Sabri and Ustad Sarwar Sabri, Pranav brings remarkable sensitivity and fire, shaping the rhythmic landscape with both subtlety and brilliance.
Together, these three master musicians offer more than a concert: they create a living tapestry of raga and rhythm, preserving the subtle nuances of centuries-old traditions while opening space for contemporary interpretation and spontaneous inspiration. The evening promises an intimate journey through resonance, improvisation, and shared listening, where ancient sound worlds meet the present moment.
This will be a rare and deeply moving opportunity to experience the meditative grace, emotional richness, and transcendent beauty of Indian classical music in the hands of true masters, performing as one.
