About this Event
“The Green Hill is an extraordinary book…. I thought of the fairy tale in which a captured princess must weave clothes from stinging nettles: Sophie Pierce has wrought something beautiful and useful from the darkest pain.” Cressida Connolly, novelist and critic
In 2017, Sophie Pierce’s son Felix died suddenly and unexpectedly, aged just 20. The Green Hill is the story of how she survived, and how his death has transformed her in unexpected ways. Deeply rooted in the wild landscapes of Dartmoor and the Devon coast, the book is a celebration of the natural world and the role it plays in our lives and relationships, as well as an examination of how beauty, a sense of place and the passing seasons can help us contend with our own mortality. Sophie is fascinated by the restorative power of natural world; The Green Hill explores this, as do her five other books, which are guides to walking and wild swimming in Dartmoor, Torbay, Cornwall, Dorset and Exmoor. Join her for a hopeful conversation about grief, love, joy and renewal.
The event is part of the ACT with the Arts Climate Festival taking place across Teignbridge from the 22nd - 29th June. For more information visit TICKETS - ACT With the Arts Festival (actionclimateteignbridge.org)
