Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi - 'Undertow' Album Launch

(RESCHEDULED TO 14th JAN)

Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi

With her first album Undertow, London-based composer/singer-songwriter Sophia Hansen-Knarhoi reveals stark venerability in a world of sound that is intimate and expansive. Voice and cello entwine to provide a cinematic intensity to songs that tell stories of memory, growth, and the raw, often dark, textures of emotion. with cinematic intensity.. ‘Undertow’ tethers intimacy to the corporeal, spanning violation and deep trust.. It deals with the fallout of the victims of violence against women, voyaging through fear and pain to absolution.

Cello and voice interact as dual narrators, layering hypnotic drones, gritty textures and raw emotive vocals. “I concentrate on developing connectivity between cello and voice, the space I hold with my body and sound. The music also expresses the way my body holds onto trauma.”
“I’m working on emphasizing a sense of touch in sound,” she says. “Connecting the body to the instrument, to the voice, fascinates me. Sound comes as a by-product of producing notes and textures. The touch of a finger on the fingerboard, the way the breath sounds before singing notes. No one performance is the same because of these sounds, these in-between moments. It's fascinating.”

Anrimeal

anrimeal is the recording project of Porto-born, London-based artist Ana Rita de Melo Alves. Working primarily alone and with simple tools, Ana builds immersive songscapes that retain the DIY quality and raw emotional material of their origins, while bursting at the seams with reference and meaning, sometimes deeply concealed.
With Half Fool Half Empty, Ana brings these secrets up to the light, with a literary companion piece to be read while listening for the full multisensory experience (headphones highly recommended). The book, also titled Half Fool Half Empty, gives a full and explicit rendering of the album’s narrative - a compelling story of existing and travelling between worlds, grown from the seed of a curious dream.
