About this Event
Following a sold-out performance at Cambridge University Global Sounds Festival in February 2026, the Cambridge Nahoft Ensemble brings Soog-e Siavash to SOAS.
This concert presents a performance of Persian classical music featuring vocals, santoor, ney, double bass, Kamancheh, and daf/tonbak, presented by the Cambridge Nahoft Ensemble. Drawing on the rich traditions of Iranian classical repertoire, the ensemble explores expressive melodies and rhythmic forms that reflect both the depth and beauty of Persian musical heritage.
The Lament for Siavash, takes its name from Suvashun (or Siavashun), an ancient Persian mourning ritual dedicated to the legendary hero, Siyavash. For centuries, musicians and poets have returned to his story to give voice to grief, resilience, and hope, expressing through sound and verse what words alone cannot fully contain.
In our own time, as sorrow and uncertainty once again touch many lives, music becomes a language through which we reflect, remember, and connect beyond politics or borders. We invite you to receive these verses and melodies as a shared space of feeling, for remembrance, for love and compassion, and ultimately, for hope.
