About the Film:
Son of Adam, Amartya Bhattacharyya, India / 2023 / Drama, Musical / 85' / UK Premiere
Synopsys:
‘Son of Adam’ is a protagonist-driven tale that represents the journey of human beings from the genesis to where we stand today. The protagonist – referred to as the ‘Son of Adam’, who was born in nature’s lap, gets drawn towards a civilized society. In the garden of Eden, his eyes fall on a lady (possibly his own mother) and his innocent attachment towards the opposite gender drives him. She comes into his life as an infatuation, and gradually blooms into an obsessive imagination and eventually turning into his destiny. Knowledge educates him, but he fails to cope up with the materialistic world, and its social complexities. He turns away from the sophistication and finds solace in that nature where he was born. The son of Adam is that innocence in each human being, which slowly and gradually fades away as we grow and evolve.
Director's Statement:
India has always had a tradition of songs and music as a central part of any artistic expression. From the Natya Shastra which dates back to over 2500 years, to the use of songs in Indian mythologies and indigenous cultures, expressing through songs has been a way of life. In Bengal, there was a tradition of ‘Tarja’, which means debates and arguments through songs. These arguments were not just entertainment, but meaningful exchange of thoughts and ideas. Literally, Indians communicated through songs. It is rather unfortunate that in recent times, songs and music have often been used in mainstream cinema only as a commercial element of entertainment.
