About this Event

~ Please note: These sessions are open to People of Colour only ~

Peaks of Colour's Soma Sessions are monthly spaces that invite global majority communities to deepen their connection with themselves, each other and the land.

Set in the Peak District, these informal and intimate sessions will offer an introduction to embodied and nature-allied practices that can assist in our healing from gendered and racialised trauma.

A space of repetition as Black Feminist practice (Foluke Taylor), and rehearsal as an abolitionist priority (Ruth Wilson Gilmore), Soma Sessions will support us to build capacity and resilience for a future in which the boundaries between our human bodies and our more-than-human landscapes are decomposed.

Session #13: Unlocking Choral Chrion w Hannah Catherine Jones

Hannah’s broad interdisciplinary praxis is connected by a central spine of decolonisation – each intertwined strand of creativity seeks to ask: How can diasporic folx utilise vibrations-frequencies-sound-music as part of individual and collective healing practices? How can these practices be sustained – with regularity and longevity, within late-capitalism?

Together we will activate healing through voice as an antidote to the condition of being perpetually wounded as diasporic subjects. To explore this, Hannah will lead us through a series of collective vocal exercises, call & response, and simple improvisatory songs.

About Hannah Catherine Jones

Hannah Catherine Jones (aka foxymoron) is a Doncaster-born, Bajan-diasporic, London-based artist, researcher, multi-instrumentalist, broadcaster/DJ (BBC Radio/TV, NTS - The Opera Show),composer, conductor, founder and creative director of Peckham Chamber Orchestra – a community project established in 2013 and founder and creative director of Chiron Choir - a queer diasporic choir established in 2022.

In performance, Jones conjures transcendent soundscapes, building layers from a live multi-instrumental set-up including theremin(s), voice, synthesisers, strings, samples and utilising fx and multiple looping systems simultaneously, to transport audiences into interdimensional sonic portals.

Jones completed her AHRC DPhil scholarship at Oxford University in 2021 for which the ongoing body of work The Oweds was presented as a series of live and recorded, broadcast, audio-visual episode-compositions, using disruptive sound as a methodology of institutional decolonisation.
