About this Event

Watching SOHMI take control of the decks and effortlessly command the attention of thousands of people at venues like Radius in Chicago or the BrooklynMirage, you can’t help but understand right away there’s something special about her.

And while being thrust in front of such high-stakes situations and crowds might cause panic for some, for the Korean American DJ, producer, and vocalist - who isa classically trained pianist and graduate of theater studies - being on stage is where she’s always felt most at home.

Landing on the scene just a few years ago, SOHMI quickly gained a reputation for her nuanced and emotive brand of DJing, subsequently becoming the first Korean woman to be named a resident at LA’s premier underground house and techno club, Sound. Though she had barely been DJing for a year at that point, it was clear to everyone that she was a natural force behind the decks.

Undoubtedly, all her years of musical training prepared SOHMI for this moment. With a sonic ethos heavily rooted in and influenced by her studies of classical music, she draws inspiration from the old symphonic masters in her approach to building DJ sets and the minimalism of modern 20th century composers in her productions. Equally influential to SOHMI’s musical vision are the slinky R&B and UK pop/garage cuts of the 90’s and early 2000’s by artists like Aaliyah, Cassie, and Craig David. Indeed, she’s driven as an artist by the desire to bridge all of these sounds together in ways that are at once familiar, yet somehow completely unexpected and new.

So far, that vision has proven effective and alluring - garnering early co-signs from some of the biggest names in the industry including BBC Radio 1’s Danny Howard, Booka Shade, Yotto, and Hot Since 82.Since putting out her first EP in 2020, SOHMI has been regularly featured on the prestigious radio show for releases such as ‘Want U 2 Love Me’(Astralwerks Records), ‘Sparks’(Nothing Else Matters),‘Closer’(Odd One Out), and ‘Small Talk’(Blaufield Music).

Showing no signs of slowing down, SOHMI tops offa landmark year in 2022 - which saw her grace the stages of some of the biggest festivals in the country including Bonnaroo, Coachella, and ElectricForest - with a brand new single, ‘Somebody’. It serves as the first taste of her upcoming 4-trackRecital EP, due out early 2023, and marks the beginning of the next chapter in SOHMI’s career in many ways.

Reflecting on the past year, SOHMI says, “A lot has happened and changed since my last release(‘Time’, 2021) and I’ve spent a lot of time diving deeper into my own personal history in order to better understand who I am; why I hurt the way I hurt, why I love the way I love. All of it has been challenging and fulfilling at the same time, but most of all, it’s been beautiful to confront who I am as a person and how that’s shaped the artist I am and strive to be today.”
