About this Event

Description:In today's rapidly evolving job market, the importance of social capital for youth career success cannot be overstated. Social capital plays a critical role in helping young people navigate the complexities of career development. By fostering connections and building robust networks, youth can access invaluable opportunities and resources that significantly enhance their career prospects. One of the key benefits of social capital is access to information. Through well-established social capital connections, young people can learn about job openings, internships, and career advancement opportunities that may not be publicly advertised. These insider tips often come from mentors, family friends, or professional acquaintances who can provide personalized advice and guidance. Furthermore, strong social networks can offer emotional support, helping youth navigate the challenges and uncertainties of early career stage.

Building social capital requires intentional effort and strategic planning. Young people should be encouraged to engage in networking activities, such as joining professional organizations, attending industry conferences, and participating in community events. Volunteering and internships are also excellent ways to build relationships with professionals in their field of interest. Schools and educational institutions can support this by integrating social capital-building activities into their curricula, offering workshops on networking skills, and providing platforms for students to connect with industry professionals.

Moreover, the role of technology in building social capital cannot be ignored. Social media platforms like LinkedIn offer young people a powerful tool to connect with professionals, join industry groups, and stay informed about trends and opportunities. However, it is essential for youth to be taught how to use these platforms effectively and professionally.

Join Edward DeJesus Jesus, founder of the Social Capital Builders, as he shares his insights on the transformative power of social capital and strategies to help young people build it.

Speaker Bio:

Edward DeJesus knows the power of social capital. As a young father in his teens growing up in the Bronx, N.Y., he had to make the decision to go to college or get a full-time rotating shift, fast food job. The problem - he would not be able to attend college because of the shift work the job required. When telling a good friend about his predicament, he was advised, “Stop, I know someone who can help. You have another move.” Thanks to his best friend, and the social capital assets that DeJesus didn’t know he had, he was able to dodge the fast food job and get a full-time evening job working with unemployed homeless men in New York City.
