Soap Making 101: Cold Process Soap MakingInstructor: Jenny Mayton

This hands-on class is designed for aspiring and existing enthusiasts interested in creating all-natural cold process soap. Students will learn how to safely and confidently make soap from scratch using quality natural oils, lye, and water, with a focus on ingredient selection for clean, effective, and beautiful soaps. The class covers essential soap making theory, proper safety procedures, and beginner-friendly formulations that can be scaled for small-batch production. Participants will also explore natural colorants, fragrance oils, and additives commonly used in all-natural bath and body products. Each student will create their own batch of cold process soap to take home, along with curing and storage guidance.

About the Instructor:
Jenny’s grandmother taught her how to make soap on her farm in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia when she was a teenager. She loves the chemistry behind soap making and has improved her skills over the years and would like to share what she has learned with others. Jenny started her soap company in 2023 as a creative outlet and it has grown from selling at farmers markets to teaching classes at the Appalachian Arts.
