Currently, there is a lack of evidence on the appropriate management of displaced hips in children with SMA under disease-modifying treatments. This is a national initiative, aiming to address this gap, through collaboration between members of the SMA REACH UK Network and SMA Care UK. This initiative is endorsed by the British Society for Surgery in Cerebral Palsy and we also asked for the formal endorsement of the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgeons.
After a highly successful 1st National Hips Management in SMA workshop in September 2023, the aim is to continue this initiative including SMA-MDT teams representing all UK regions. Patient advocacy groups and representatives, charities and other essential allied health professionals will be involved in this workshop and help to feed into this SMA REACH UK and SMA Care UK collaborative project.
The goal is to conduct a Delphi Consensus Exercise involving SMA-MDT teams from all major UK paediatric centres. Each local SMA-MDT team will include a surgeon, a paediatric neurologist/neuromuscular consultant, and a physiotherapist. The Delphi Consensus will be coordinated by the SMA-MDT teams from Great Ormond Street and Evelina London Children's Hospitals, with Round 1 taking place online before the workshop, involving all participating centres.
Sixteen statements about the management of displaced hips in children with SMA have been generated as a starting point for the Delphi Consensus Project.
The objective of the 2nd National Workshop on Hips Management in SMA is to present the results of Round 1 and proceed with Round 2 live, aiming for agreement on any altered statements that have not yet reached consensus.
