Join us at the Consulate General of Ukraine in San Francisco for a powerful cinematic evening exploring one of the most tragic chapters in Ukraine’s cultural history — the story of the Slovo House. Once a symbol of the Ukrainian literary renaissance, this building in Kharkiv became a prison of words, the infamous home of the “Executed Renaissance”, where Stalin’s regime targeted and ultimately destroyed Ukraine’s brightest minds. In a unique double screening, we will present two films — both titled “Slovo House” — by acclaimed Ukrainian director Taras Tomenko:
~ The Documentary “Slovo House” — An investigative chronicle of the lives and deaths of the Slovo House residents, blending rare archival materials with present-day reflections.
~ The Feature Film “Slovo House. Unfinished Novel” — A dramatized reimagining of the cultural and emotional world of Ukrainian writers as they descend into the heart of political repression.
Event Highlights
~ Video Address by the film director Taras Tomenko
~ Q&A Discussion with Nataliia Goshylyk, Ph.D. (UC Berkeley)
~ Silent Auction featuring commemorative coins, branded t-shirts, and film stills personally signed by the director and actors of the film
~ Snacks & Refreshments served
This event is not just about films — it is about remembrance, resistance, and the enduring power of Ukrainian identity. As Ukraine once again defends its language, culture, and future, the “Slovo House” reminds us of the cost of silence and the courage of those who refused to be silenced.
