About this Event
Slack Off is a darkly comedic and deeply personal solo show that follows Penina Beede, a young Jewish woman who experiences a manic episode, enters into an abusive relationship, and impulsively enlists in the Israeli army, as a foreign recruit assigned to a low-level, bureaucratic desk job. What follows is a journey into the absurd: an exploration of identity, mental illness, and the search for meaning in all the wrong places.
The show weaves together personal storytelling, sharp humor, historical context, and audience engagement to ask: How does a progressive American Jew end up in an army uniform? How do coercion, instability, and inherited belief systems shape our most irrational decisions? And what happens when the fantasy of purpose collides with the reality of military life?
Penina’s story unfolds across language barriers, awkward encounters, medical evaluations, and endless paperwork, set to the backdrop of a system she doesn’t understand and doesn’t quite believe in. As she tries to hold together her fractured sense of self, she is met with the surreal logic of army culture, the contradictions ideology, and the aftermath of psychological crisis. The show does not seek to justify her actions—it seeks to understand them. With equal parts humor and heartbreak, Slack Off asks what it means to try to do the right thing when you no longer trust your own mind.
Thematically, the play explores American Jewish identity, mental illness, military violence, trauma, and the longing to fit in. It resonates with anyone who has questioned their upbringing, faced the fallout of bad decisions, or tried to reclaim themselves after losing control. It’s not an exposé or a lecture—it’s a reckoning. And maybe, if the audience is willing to laugh with her, a step toward redemption.
