Ester Grohová, also known as expandcollapse, navigates the boundary between ambient and experimental music in her work as a producer. She draws from field recordings she has collected and enriches her layered sound collages with vocals or the delicate tones of the clarinet and other instruments. In this way, she creates fantastical utopian worlds—intimate narratives of abstract stories.
The focus of her work currently lies on themes of collective care and connection, utopia, escapism, intersectional feminism, and interspecies communication. To give form to these ideas and emotions, she most often uses the medium of performance, video, or musical composition, and occasionally her euphoric alter ego, DJ POLYESTER, emerges from the shadows.
