About the Musicians:
Arjun Verma is the son of Roop Verma, whose sitar concerts and workshops many of our students have experienced here at the school. Arjun was already taught by his father at the age of 5 and continued his sitar lessons as a teenager with one of Roop's teachers, the world-famous Ali Akbar Khan. Arjun continues the tradition in the best possible way - both as a concert musician and teacher. He teaches at the Ali Akbar College of Music, California Jazz Conservatory and is also head of the sitar line at the East-West School of Music. He works from the same understanding of classical North Indian music as his two teachers: music is not entertainment, but a path to personal development - a means of connecting with the deepest experiences of being human. The sound vibrations strike strings in our innermost being.

The approach to music offers a unique opportunity for immersion and Arjun Verma brings this quality whether he is playing for a small dedicated group or a large audience, as when he played for the UN in Geneva for its 50th anniversary. Or when he brings the sitar into Western music forms such as opera and jazz or collaborates with Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. Among the many artists he works with are Krishna Das and Alam Khan.
Gurdain Rayatt was born and lives in the UK, where he is one of the country's leading tabla players. He has played at many prominent concert venues and at major Indian music festivals such as Darbar and Saptak, as well as world music festivals such as WOMAD. Gurdain studied with tabla legend Guru Acharya Pandit Shankar Ghosh.
His performances range from traditional classical Indian music and dance to cross-cultural and experimental fusion works.
