Join us to help the Make Welcome Sewing School continue it's work in serving the refugee community. Make Welcome is a non-profit, vocational sewing school for refugee women in Charlotte, NC. We work to empower refugee women as they make a new home in the United States. We do this through vocational training, mentorship and employment opportunities. You can read more about Make Welcome here.

Join us for an exciting 2-day sewing adventure as we delve into the construction of the Unfolding Jacket, formerly known as the Haori Kimono, a chic and versatile garment originally designed by Wiksten, an esteemed indie pattern brand. Although the pattern has been discontinued, its timeless appeal and unique design elements continue to inspire sewists worldwide. In this comprehensive class, we'll guide you through the process of creating your own Unfolding Jacket, empowering you to bring your vision to life and infuse your wardrobe with personalized style.

In this class we will cover:

-Laying out, pinning and cutting the fabric

-how to transfer the pattern markings to your fabric pieces

-how to apply interfacing

-basics of garment construction

-how to sew neat seams, including a french seam

-how to do a narrow hem

-tips on working with handwoven materials

Throughout the class, you'll learn essential sewing techniques and gain valuable insights into garment construction, enabling you to tackle this project with confidence. Whether you're an experienced sewist looking to expand your skills or a beginner eager to embark on your sewing journey, this class is designed to accommodate all skill levels.

If bringing your own materials, refer to the charts below to find your size and fabric requirements for your chosen size.
  2. Use Our Materials ($245):

What to bring:

  • If you have your own sewing machine it is encouraged to bring your own. We do have machines available if you do not have one of your own, but if you do have your own machine we recommend bringing in your machine so we can assist in any issues so you know how to problem solve when sewing on it at home.
  • We have all tools needed to complete this project, but if you have sewing tools (such as scissors, pins, etc.) that you want to bring, feel free!
  • Your materials if not using our provided materials

Seasonally appropriate snacks and beverages will be provided and we will gather to get to know other local sewers in our community.

When you register for the event, you will receive a questionnaire and a separate invoice. Once invoice is sent out, you have 5 days to pay. If not paid in 5 days, your registration will be canceled.

Did you know that it takes $300 per student to run sewing classes at Make Welcome? And this doesn’t include extra supplies and fabric that are needed throughout the year. And to provide a sewing machine and kit to each student upon graduation costs around $200. Your participation in this class goes a long way. It allows us to continue to offer vocational sewing training to refugee women in need so they can work towards vocational and financial independence here in the US. We and our students are so thankful and blessed for your support and contribution to the work we are doing. Here are a few photos from one of our weekly classes with our beginner students.
