100th Anniversary Screening! Magic is infused in every frame of THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED, Lotte Reiniger’s silhouette-animated film is exquisitely composed of intricate paper cut-outs. Predating Disney’s stronghold on animated fairy tales, PRINCE ACHMED is one of the first, and earliest surviving animated feature-length films. Reiniger drew from The Blue Fairy Book’s “One Thousand and One Nights” for her enchanted Arabian tale of Achmed—a prince tricked by an evil sorcerer and banished to a foreign land where he falls in love with a princess in peril.
Claiming to believe “more in the truth of fairy tales than that found in the newspapers,” Reiniger was a cinematic fantasy genre pioneer. Taking a painstaking three years for Reiniger to animate, PRINCE ACHMED is a technical marvel, and 100 years after its initial release, it still manages delight young and old alike!
