(Ildikó Enyedi, 2025, Germany/Hungary/France, 147 minutes)A hit on the fall 2025 festival circuit—Venice, Toronto, Chicago—Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi’s Silent Friend’s title character is an enormous gingko tree in the center of a university campus in Germany. Alternating between three timelines, 1908, 1972, and 2020, Silent Friend is a female-centric ruminative wonder that shows a real curiosity about the world and has an impressive multicultural cast (including Hong Kong’s Tony Leung, who has been on our screen a lot lately, as well as France’s Léa Seydoux, who had previously collaborated with Enyedi on her 2021 film The Story of My Wife). By nature of the film’s subject it corners itself into having beautiful cinematography, which Roy Andersson’s go-to DP Gergely Pálos handles with aplomb.
In German and English with English subtitles.
