About this Event

Sick Stories is launching a literary magazine - join us in making it a reality!

Our fundraising community event is on June 1st at the Pink Studio from 5:30-7:30pm. Come for a night of disability-led readings, speakers, fun activities, and of course, raffle prizes.

About Sick Stories Magazine: The number of stories that are published that positively champion disabilities are few and far between, with many mainstream publishers deeming these stories as “unsellable”. The stories that do get told to large audiences are historically of disabled protagonists written by non-disabled authors, and/or portrayed by non-disabled actors. This regularly leads to tropes and harmful stereotypes, compounding the difficulty of disabled individuals finding meaningful publishing credits, work opportunities, and even safe living environments.

Sick Stories wants to help close this gap. Our magazine will scale to publish three issues a year solely containing Disabled voices. Full of prose, poetry, non-fiction, and visual arts, we’ll be able to tell our stories that have everything or nothing to do with Disability, and publish 60 voices a year while doing so!

About Pink Studio: An inclusive Dance + Fitness studio in the east end of Tkaronto/Toronto, just around the corner from Woodbine Subway Station. The space is wheelchair accessible, and hosts gender neutral washrooms. Masks will be required.

About Sick Stories: Sick Stories was founded in 2020 to bring greater visibility and awareness to disabilities through literature. Founded by Sophie Lyons, a white, queer disabled writer and lifelong reader who never saw herself represented in literature or media growing up.
