Short Story Workshop In this generative workshop, we’ll focus on the art of the short story, led by MFA graduate and short story writer Maeve Barry.
About this Event

In this generative workshop, we’ll focus on the art of the short story, studying and honing the voice, arc, form and tone of a piece, exploring all that the short story is capable of as a form. We’ll spend this session looking at some published short stories and talking about what strategies the writer might be using, and what could inspire our own work. Then, every student will have the chance to workshop one of their own stories, and Maeve will select a published short piece to accompany it, that might be helpful for/ in conversation with student work. The goal for the class is that everyone will leave with a story they feel excited by, with a clear direction for how to continue working on it, and/or ideas for where to submit for publication. The hope is that everyone leaves with some general tricks and ideas for future pieces, and a reading list from some of the short-story greats.

Please be on the lookout for an email a couple of weeks before the class about readings and the option to submit your own work. Emails will be sent to the email address you used to register. Please email [email protected] if you have had not heard anything before the start of class.

Maeve Barry is a writer in New York. She grew up in western Massachusetts. She teaches writing, and is the winner of the annual fiction prizes from The Iowa Review (2025), Ninth Letter (2025) and The Sewanee Review (2024.) Her stories have also been recognized by BOMB Magazine and The Florida Review. She's working on her first novel.
