Johan Rönnby was born in 1962 in Degerfors, Sweden. He is a maritime archaeologist, PhD, academic researcher, and senior professor. He is also a professional diver and diver supervisor. He has published around 150 titles in connection to archaeological research and exploration. Rönnby’s research has often focused on different shipwrecks in the Baltic Sea but also Viking Age lake dwellings, harbors, and prehistoric landscapes underwater, coastal landscapes, and humans’ cultural and social interaction with water. He has been part of expeditions to the Arctic and worked with deep water archaeology in the Black Sea. Rönnby has been a guest professor at Skidmore College, New York, US and Middlebury College, Vermont, US. He lives in Gamleby, Sweden. His hobbies include long distance running, triathlon, and cross-country skiing. Johan Rönnby is currently employed at Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden as professor in maritime archaeology and head of MARIS (Maritime Archaeology Research Institute).
