Workshop Outline:
1. Talk by Ms Sneha Srikanth, SHIP (20min + 10min Q&A)
About Ms Sneha Srikanth
Sneha joined SHIP in Jan 2024. Prior to this, she did her internship in Hummingbird Bioscience Pte. Ltd. where she started to develop an interest in IP. She assisted in managing the company’s IP Portfolio which includes evaluating existing patents, identifying potential areas for new filing and preparation of IP related documents. This experience not only honed her skills but fuelled her curiosity to explore the intersection of law and science further leading her to join SHIP.
Synopsis
Sneha from SHIP, the tech transfer office of SingHealth will provide an overview of intellectual property (IP) and its vital role in fostering innovation and enabling commercialisation. Learn how SHIP bridges the gap between research and commercialisation through technology transfer. The talk explores the types of intellectual property defining their characteristics and legal protections, the patent process, criteria for patentability, and the importance of confidentiality before disclosing innovations. Real-world examples will be used to illustrate how IP safeguards ideas, brands, and products.

Patrick moved to Singapore in August 2016, from his former home base in Silicon Valley, California. Patrick is an attorney at law and US registered patent attorney with an electrical engineering background and over twenty years of legal experience. Over his career, Patrick has worked, in near equal proportions, within the legal specialties of patent prosecution, patent litigation and patent development.
Before joining Drew & Napier, Patrick worked in various patent law firms and in house at National Semiconductor (an analog and wireless semiconductor chip manufacturer, now a division of Texas Instruments), Nichia Chemical (the world’s top solid state lighting and blue laser diode manufacturer), and Western Digital (the world’s top data storage company). At Drew & Napier, Patrick primarily works on patent application drafting, patent office responses, freedom-to-operate reports, and patent litigation support.
About Dr Hong Lei
Dr. Hong Lei is a Singapore registered patent agent with a technical background in information and communication technology (ICT), wireless communication, AI/ML, data encryption, blockchain, and computer implemented methods.
Prior to joining Drew & Napier, Dr. Hong Lei served as a senior patent examiner and head of the ICT unit at IPOS. During his nine years at IPOS International, Dr. Hong Lei examined patent applications and additionally developed internal examination search handbooks for his team. This direct patent office experience enables Dr. Hong Lei to provide practical and actionable guidance when drafting and prosecuting patents.
Synopsis
As AI technology increasingly drives global innovation, understanding the legal frameworks governing its patent protection has become essential for businesses and inventors. In addition to demonstrating an inventive step, applicants must address the legal hurdle of “patentable subject matter” to secure patent rights for AI-related inventions.
Patrick Duncan, Senior Patent Associate, and Dr. Hong Lei, Patent Agent, from Drew & Napier LLC—a top law firm with a leading IP practice in Singapore—will review the latest guidance on the examination of AI-related patent applications in Singapore. They will also compare Singapore’s approach with that of the United States and China, illustrating key differences with specific examples. Attendees will gain insights into jurisdictional variations and actionable strategies for navigating the patenting process for AI innovations.
Talk Outline
- Comparison of patentability of AI-related patent applications in Singapore vs. in China
- Comparison of patentability of AI-related patent applications in Singapore vs. in U.S.
