The World's Music at Oxford welcomes the UK's premier klezmer and Balkan ensemble as they celebrate their 25th anniversary!
About this Event

The seven-piece She’Koyokh have been at the forefront of the UK’s klezmer and Balkan music scene for 25 years – and they’re celebrating with their signature mix of intense musicality and exuberant flair.

Founded in 2001, they began life as a street band in the East End of London, playing an astonishing and fiery repertoire of traditional and contemporary klezmer – Yiddish folk music that was born in the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe in the 18th century and later distilled among the Jewish diaspora in the US. As the ensemble’s sound evolved and musicians came and went, they’ve taken on influences from the Balkans, Greece and Turkey. Now with members hailing from Turkey, Serbia, Spain and the UK, She’Koyokh’s line-up is as diverse as the music they make: three members are graduates from London’s prestigious Royal Academy of Music; two are esteemed jazz musicians; accordionist Živorad Nikolić is one Serbia’s finest players of traditional folklore; Kurdish singer Çiğdem Aslan is a celebrity in the world of rembetiko music; and Susi Evans has been hailed as “the Queen of klezmer clarinet” by the Clarinet & Saxophone Society of Great Britain. All seven of them are virtuoso musicians who have spent decades absorbing and performing the rich folk music traditions of Jewish Eastern Europe and beyond.

Expect a wild swirl of swooping clarinet and violin duels, heart-thumping percussion, soaring vocals, expert accordion, jazzy guitar licks, and the deep, rich pulse of the double bass - a powerhouse lineup of musicians who bring these traditions to life with passion and soul. We can’t wait to welcome She'Koyokh to the World’s Music at Oxford to mark their anniversary with style!

Doors will open at 6:30pm and the performance will start at 7pm.
