About this Event
Join Qiaira Riley and Yannick Lowery for the third session in their reality-TV inspired creative workshop and supper series, Shaking the Table! This cyanotype workshop will use imagery of depictions of Black women from reality television to explore Black gendered deviance in popular culture. Cyanotypes, or sun prints are created from a 170 year old photographic process, utilizing the sun's UV rays to create prints. Materials will be provided but people are welcome to bring photo negatives and other flat items that can easily produce a shadow (flowers, fabric, beads, etc.) For supper, we will be having shrimp & grits, collards & macroni and cheese with both meat-eaters and vegan options available.
About Shaking the Table
Shaking the Table is a series of interdisciplinary workshops and community meals exploring our collective and personal relationships to Black ephemera, popular culture, and reality television through art-making and food. Each event includes an interactive activity and dialogue encouraging participants to theoretically explore themes of identity, family, gender and deviance by analyzing iconic depictions from magazines, television, and film. During our time together we offer meals, inspired by memorable scenes from reality tv that uplift the activity’s theme. We’d hope that each activity will build on the revelations from the previous one, while allowing neighbors to build deeper bonds with one another. This work is supported by Barnes West Everyday Places Partnership at hosted at the Art League (4226 Spruce Street)
About Barnes West Everyday Places Artist Partnerships
Everyday Places Artist Partnerships highlight the intersection of art and community and create spaces where residents can participate in art experiences in their neighborhood. This year, social impact artists will once again partner with “everyday” places in West Philadelphia—including local businesses and community organizations—to create interactive projects that engage with the spaces and their neighbors.
