About this Event
First exhibition of new works in 20 years
For the first time in two decades, artist Simon David Eden unveils a powerful new body of work in Shadow Light: Songs My Brother Taught Me at Phoenix Art Space.
Twenty years in the making, this deeply personal exhibition features 20 new collage prints and assemblage works, born from a moment of loss and transformation. In 2006, following his participation in the 2nd Art & Science Symposium & Exhibition at the Tsinghua Academy of Arts in Beijing, Eden began photographing a treasured acoustic guitar that had been irreparably broken. Rather than discarding it, he chose to document it, fragment by fragment, beginning a creative journey that would unfold over two decades.
The resulting works are both intimate and resonant. They serve as a tribute to Eden’s late brother, Stephen, whose life ended tragically at the age of 20. Fifty years on, this exhibition stands as an act of remembrance, an exploration of memory, grief, resilience and light found within shadow.
Through layered collage and sculptural assemblage, Shadow Light transforms damage into beauty and absence into presence. These works invite viewers into a space where music, memory and material converge.
