Talk with Team Malizia featuring Boris Herrmann: ocean, climate & research. Insights, videos, adventures—fun for families!
About this Event

Sailing around the world — non-stop, solo, and on an ultra-fast high-tech yacht: professional sailor Boris Herrmann, has already achieved this remarkable feat. He has raced around the globe six times. In September, he and his team will set off from New York City to compete in The Ocean Race Atlantic 2026.

As a firsthand witness to climate change, Boris is deeply interested in the ocean’s role in the global climate system. Equipped with a mobile laboratory on his racing yacht, he collects vital data on ocean health, helping scientists better understand the ocean and the impacts of climate change.

Complementing the racing yacht is the research sailing vessel Malizia Explorer, which has already carried out expeditions to remote regions such as the Danger Islands, Antarctica.

We invite families to an exciting, interactive talk: through images and videos, we offer insights into life on board and life under water. Together, we explore why the ocean plays such a crucial role in our climate — and what we can do to protect it. With an input by University of Cologne Alumnus and climate expert Jannik Martens, PhD on climate change solutions and negative emission technologies such as CO₂ capture and removal.

Antarctica is a particularly fragile and biodiverse ecosystem and a key region for climate research, where changes in sea ice and wildlife habitats can be observed. With thrilling adventure stories in our luggage, we invite you and your children to dive into the icy world — starting from New York.

Recommended for ages 8+
