On April 15, 1876, the Allegheny Base Ball Club marched onto the Union Park grounds to play against the Xantha squad. Numerous visiting pro teams had rolled through the region before, but the Allegheny were the first organized group of paid players that called Pittsburgh or the adjoining Allegheny City (now Northside) home. So on April 15th this year, a few of us are planning on meeting up for a drink and/or a snack at the Lion in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of this first pro game played mere footsteps away.We don’t have scheduled speakers, and aren’t planning any fireworks or drone shows, but feel free to swing by to get out of the house for a few moments, or on your way down to PNC Park (the Allegheny BBC’s ‘spiritual’-but-not-literal descendants, the Bucs, are playing the Nats at 6:40, I think).
