REGULATIONS:
SEIB Search For A Star Competition (“SFAS”) is open to amateur riders only except the Still a Star Open Ridden Veteran Class that only qualifies for Your Horse Live. Eligible riders for HOYS include those who have not ridden, exhibited or owned a horse that has competed in a showing class at Horse of the Year Show since 2021, horses and ponies cannot ever have been exhibited at HOYS in any class; who do not produce, ride or train horses or riders for the show ring for remuneration or live with someone who does, and are not judges registered with any association or society. You must read the rule book to ensure eligibility.
SFAS is open to horses and ponies who have not qualified for Horse of the Year Show (“HOYS”) before 1 March 2025. They may have qualified for Royal International Horse Show (“RIHS”) before this date but may not have been placed up to 8th in any class including Amateurs, except UKPH amateur class. The horse or pony must never have been exhibited by a professional show rider or producer before competing at HOYS or Your Horse Live including in-hand. The is no requirement to register with any showing society to compete.
The onus is on the exhibitor, rider and owner to ensure that they meet the criteria of the SEIB Search for a Star competition.
Entries WILL NOT BE REFUNDED if you enter and subsequently find you are NOT eligible. READ the RULES when entering.
SEIB Search for a Star
Horse of the Year Show Qualifiers
The following classes are qualifiers for the SEIB Search for a Star Horse of the Year Show Finals to be held at the Horse of the Year Show, NEC, Birmingham, 7th – 11th October 2026. A Qualifying Horse and Rider may be invited to compete at HOYS. Qualifying in a class in the Competition does not automatically entitle a Horse and Rider to an invitation to compete at HOYS. An invitation to compete at HOYS will be issued only if the judges consider the Qualifying Horse and Rider are suitable to appear at HOYS. For the avoidance of doubt, no Horse or Rider who might have been placed first, second or third but for the presence of the Qualified Horse or Rider, will be entitled to compete at HOYS unless invited to do so. At the absolute discretion of the organisers a Horse and Rider who have been placed second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the Competition may qualify to compete at HOYS if the Qualifying Horse and Rider are not eligible.
Working Pony 122cms to 148cms or under. Ponies 5 years and over. Riders 12 years or over on the date of the HOYS championship. Riders will be asked to give a short show and jump two fences at 2ft and 2ft 3in. Adults and children may enter and ride ponies in this class as long as their weight and size is appropriate, decision of the judge is final on the suitability of horse and rider. Unsuitable combinations will be eliminated. Judges will ensure that conformation and temperament will allow the pony to be a competent all round performer, capable of doing most work including jumping and dressage. Harmony of pony and rider will be taken into account. Jumping style and approach is important and the judges will not ride. The same bridle must be worn throughout and snaffle bridles will not be penalised, no running gags, martingales are optional. 1st will qualify at Judge’s discretion. Rosettes for all, Placed down to 6th. Set show and class will be marked.
Working Horse Qualify for Horse of the Year Show Horses over 148cms. Horses 5 years and over. Riders 12 years or over on the date of the HOYS championship. Riders will be asked to give a short show and jump two fences at 2ft 3in and 2ft 6in. Adults and children may enter and ride horses in this class. Riders must not be over-horsed and the decision of the judge is final on the suitability of the horse and rider. Unsuitable combinations will be eliminated. Judges will ensure that conformation and temperament allows the horse to be a competent all round performer, capable of doing most work including jumping and dressage. Harmony of horse and rider will be taken into account. Jumping style and approach is important. The judges will not ride. The same bridle must be worn throughout and snaffle bridles will not be penalised, no running gags, martingales are optional. Tweed or show jackets. 1st will qualify at Judge’s discretion. Placed down to 6th Set show and class will be marked.
Show Hunters 153cms and over. 5 years and over. Riders 15 years or over on the day of the HOYS
championship. Class will not be divided into different weights. Best of type will win. Tweed jacket.
1stqualifies at judges discretion placed to 6th. Will be ridden by the judge.
Riding Horse/ Hack Hacks exceeding 148cms not exceeding 160cms, riding horse exceeding 148cms, 5 years or over. Riders 15 years or over on the date of the HOYS championship. Riding horse - tweed jacket. Hack - show jacket. The best of type will win. 1st qualifies at judges discretion irrespective of type placed to 6th. Will be ridden by the judge
Show Cobs & Maxi Cobs Exceeding 148cm Show & maxi cobs, best of type will win. Maxi cobs
should be true to type and all cobs should be hogged. Riders 15 years or over on the date of the HOYS championship and horses 5 years or over. Tweed jacket. 1st qualifies at judges discretion. Placed down to 6th. Will be ridden by the judge
Traditional Gypsy Cobs (All Colours) Horses 5 years or over. No stallions. Open to horses and ponies registered as a traditional gypsy cob of any colour within the TGCA stud book. Part-breds not eligible. Riders 12 years and over on the day of the HOYS championship. Any queries about horse registration contact [email protected]. Owners and riders do not have to be a member of the TGCA but horses have to be registered in the TGCA traditional gypsy cob stud book. Traditionals will not be ridden by the judge or the judge‘s representative, but will give a show. The traditional gypsy cob should be a strong, sturdy and powerful cob coupled with an abundance of luxuriant flowing mane, forelock, tail, and leg hair known as feather. 1st will qualify at judge’s discretion. Placed down to 6th.

Your Horse Live Qualifiers
The following classes are qualifiers for the SEIB Search for a Star YOUR HORSE LIVE Finals to be held Your Horse Live 6th – 8th November. Qualifying in a class in the Competition does not automatically entitle a Horse and Rider to an invitation to compete at Your Horse Live. An invitation to compete at YHL will be issued only if the judges consider the Qualifying Horse or Rider are suitable to appear at YHL. At the absolute discretion of the Organisers a Horse and Rider who have been placed second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the Competition may qualify to compete at YHL if the Qualifying Horse and Rider are not eligible.
Amateur Ridden Mountain & Moorland Ponies must meet the breed standard, be registered in the relevant stud book and be 4 years of age or over. Riders must be 8 years of age or over on the date of the YHL championship. 1st placed will qualify at judges discretion.
Amateur In-hand Mountain & Moorland Ponies must meet the breed standard, be registered in the relevant stud book All breed standards that are expected in the ridden class stand. Handlers 10 years of age or over on the date of the YHL championship. Horses/ponies 3 years of age or over. Animals should not be plaited. Ponies must be shown in a bridle with a bit. 1st placed pony to qualify.
Still a Star Open Ridden Veteran Horse & Pony There are no amateur restrictions in this class. Open to any horse Or pony 16 years of age or over with any rider including show horse producers 10 years of age or over. Horses and ponies will compete together and will be expected to canter together as a class, they will be asked to extend. No lead reins. Riders 10 years of age or over on the date of the YHL championship. No restrictions other than age of horse, pony or rider. Will be asked to extend and must be able to canter together as one class. The horse or pony will not be ridden by the judge and the competitor will be expected to give a show. Horses may be ridden side saddle. 1st placed will qualify at judges discretion.
Amateur In-hand Veteran Horse or Pony Horse or pony must be 16 years of age or over on the
date of the YHL championship. Handlers 10 years of age or over on the date of the YHL championship. Any type of veteran horse or pony is eligible but horse or pony, owner and handler must fit the amateur SEIB Search for a Star rules, best of type on the day will win. Handler and horse may have competed at HOYS but ONLY in the Search for a Star series, the rest of the amateur rules stand. Horses or ponies that have been placed in the SSADL Championship at RIHS are eligible to compete in the Veteran in-hand Search for a Star class. Horses must be shown in a bridle with a bit. 1st placed horse or pony to qualify.
Amateur In-hand Plaited Horse (including Hogged Show Cob) Horses over 15hh, handlers 14 years of age or over on the date of the YHL championship. Horses 3 years of age or over. Any type of plaited show horse or hogged show cob is eligible, best of type on the day will win. Horses must be shown in a bridle with a bit. 1st placed horse to qualify
Amateur In-hand Plaited Pony Ponies 15hh or under, handlers 10 years of age or over on the date
of the YHL championship. Ponies 3 years of age or over. Any type of plaited pony, best of type
on the day will win. Ponies must be shown in a bridle with a bit. 1st placed pony to qualify
Amateur In-hand Traditional Gypsy Cob & Part Bred TGCA Handlers 10 years of age or over on the date of the YHL championship. Horses / ponies 3 years of age or over of any colour. Open to horses and ponies registered as a traditional gypsy cob or part bred within the TGCA stud book. Horses / ponies must be shown in a bridle with a bit. 1st placed horse or pony to qualify. Class will be split in the ring between Pure Bred Traditionals & Part Breds. Part-breds of any colour all sections included Drum, Sport, Native, Show cob, Pony. Two sets of Rosettes to be awarded 1-6th for Pure Breds & 1st to 6th for Part Breds. 1st placed Traditional & 1st Placed Part Bred will qualify. If there are no part breds forward then only one Pure Bred Traditional will go forward.
Amateur Riding Club Type Horse Horses, Riders and owners must meet the SFAS amateur criteria. Horses and ponies may have been to HOYS but only in the SFAS competition. Horse exceeding 148cms, over 4 years old. Riders must be 12 years old or over on the date of the YHL Championship and capable of cantering with the rest of the class. Competitors may compete side saddle. No jumping. Snaffles, pelhams and simple double bridles are acceptable, SFAS rider weight restrictions apply. Will be asked to give a short show and will not be ridden by the judge, will be stripped for conformation. Horses and ponies to be plaited unless they are registered mountain and moorland, native or traditional types. The animal should be an athletic type capable of doing all round Riding Club activities. The class will be judged on conformation, way of going and temperament. The horse or pony will not be ridden by the judge but the competitor will be asked to give a show. Open to any type of horse or pony that is athletic enough to be an all-rounder but correct enough to be a show horse. 1st to qualify for Your Horse Live. Placed down to 6th.
Amateur Pony Club Type Pony Ponies 148cms or under Riders aged 11 years – 25 years on the date of the YHL Championship. Riders and owners must meet the SFAS amateur criteria. Open to ponies that meet the Search for a Star Amateur criteria. Horse or pony must be over 4 years old not exceeding 148cms. No spurs allowed. Will be asked to give a show, will be stripped for conformation. Ponies to be plaited unless they are registered mountain and moorland, native or traditional types. The animal should be an athletic type capable of doing all round Pony Club activities. The class will be judged on conformation, way of going and temperament. The pony will not be ridden by the judge but the competitor will be asked to give a set show. Open to any type of pony that is athletic enough to be an all-rounder but correct enough to be a show animal. Ponies that have been placed in the Pretty Polly Championships at RIHS are eligible to compete in the Search for a Star Pony Club type classes. There will be a set show. 1st to qualify for Your Horse Live. Placed down to 6th.
Amateur Leading Rein Riders aged 10 and under but over 5 on the date of the YHL Championship. Riders, ponies, owners and handlers must meet the SFAS amateur criteria. Pony of ANY type but must be 128cms or under and meet the Search for a Star Amateur criteria. Snaffle bridles only. Pony must be over 4 years old. No spurs allowed. Lead rein must be attached to the noseband and not the bit and the child should be able to rise to the trot. Judged on conformation, way of going and temperament to be suitable for a young child, pony will not be stripped but will give a set show. Handlers of the lead rein pony should be suitably dressed with a hat and suitable footwear, ponies to be plaited unless they are registered mountain and moorland, traditional or native types. Ponies that have been placed in the Pretty Polly Championships at RIHS are eligible to compete in the Search for a Star Lead Rein classes. There will be a set show. 1st placed to qualify for Your Horse Live., Placed down to 6th.
Amateur First Ridden Riders aged 10 and under but over 6 on the date of the YHL Championship. Riders, ponies and owners must meet the SFAS amateur criteria. Pony of ANY type but must be 138cms or under and meet the Search for a Star Amateur criteria. Pony must be over 4 years old. No spurs allowed. Must be ridden independently but will not be asked to canter as a class. Snaffle bridles only. Will be asked to give a set show, ponies will be stripped for conformation.. Ponies to be plaited unless they are registered mountain and moorland, native or traditional types. Ponies that have been placed in the Pretty Polly Championships at RIHS are eligible to compete in the Search for a Star First Ridden classes. There will be a set show. 1st to qualify for Your Horse Live., Placed down to 6th.
SEIB RACE HORSE to RIDING HORSE
Horse of the Year Show Qualifier

REGULATIONS: This Competition is only for thoroughbred Horses (as determined in accordance with paragraph 6.6 in the SFAS Rule Book (“Thoroughbred”) that have previously run in a race under the rules of an approved racing authority recognised as such by the British Horse racing Authority (a “Recognised Racing Authority”).
For the purposes of determining that a Horse is a Thoroughbred: if the Horse was foaled in Great Britain, Ireland or the Channel Islands, it must be registered in the register of the breeding of thoroughbred horses maintained by the Stud Book Authority of Great Britain and Ireland (known as “Weatherby’s General Stud Book”); and if the Horse is foaled in a country other than Great Britain, Ireland or the Channel Islands, the Entrant must be able to produce a certificate from the Horse’s country of origin which demonstrates that the Horse is a Thorough bred.
The following Horses are not eligible to be exhibited at the Competition:
• any stallion or entire;
• any Horse that has been placed 1st in any previous Racehorse to Riding Horse Show Championship at Horse of the Year Show (“HOYS”);
• any Horse that has not run in any race (including point to point, national hunt or on the flat) under the rules of a Recognised Racing Authority;
• any Horse under 148cm tall;
• any Horse under 4 years old; or
• any Horse that is not a Thoroughbred
The first horse will go forward to Horse of the Year Show; if the first horse has already qualified, at the organisers discretion, horses down the line will be eligible to compete at the HOYS Championship.
Race Horse to Riding Horse Horses must be over 4 years old and 148cms or over, riders must be 15 years old and over.
