Visit us each month on Second Saturdays to explore history and hands-on crafts at our riverfront Maritime Center.
May 9: Voices of the First Peoples: Lenape Indian Tribe of Delaware will celebrate and explore Indigenous traditions, history, and cultural resilience. Sample native foods, and learn about agriculture, sailing, and more. Presentations will include:
- Welcome & Tribal History with Chief Dennis Coker
- Indigenous Food Demonstration with Henry Ward, Archaeologist & Chef
-Documentary Screening: “First People. First State: Cheswold’s American Indian Community” which honors the voices, lived experiences, and stories from Cheswold Community Elders.

June 13: The Great American Beaver Scavenger Hunt, a family-friendly event. Complete a scavenger hunt in Fort Christina Park focused on world trade in early America while you collect the pieces to make their own American beaver. Location (next door to Kalmar Nyckel): Fort Christina Park, 1110 East 7th St., Wilmington, DE 19801. Free park admission.
Museum admission is $10/adult, $5/kid (ages 3-12), and under 3 is free.
July 11 at Fort Christina State Park for "What's in a Flag?” This fun and educational family-friendly program explores the origins and symbolism of four flags related to the history of Christina Park: the Swedish, Finnish, Stars and Stripes (American), and Delaware State flags. Then create your own symbolic/national flag. Location (next door to Kalmar Nyckel): Fort Christina Park, 1110 East 7th St., Wilmington, DE 19801. Free park admission.

August 8: Lions, Sea Serpents & Mermaids... Oh My!
Find us at Fort Christina State Park to explore sailors’ and sailing ships' folklore and use of sea monsters and other mythical creatures. Visitors will be invited to create their own racing, scary sea serpents! Admission to the park is free.
Museum admission is $10/adult, $5/kid (ages 3-12), and under 3 is free.
NOTE: Free parking at the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation lot across the road from the Park.
October 10: Unmasking Halloween - This fun and educational family program uncovers the spooky and mysterious history of Halloween and our favorite Halloween traditions like Jack-O-Lanterns and Trick or Treating. Afterwards, visitors will be invited to create their own scary masks! Museum admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
November 14: Foods We Are Thankful For - This program explores the traditional foods and foodways of the native Lenape and the Swedes/Finns. After learning this culinary history, visitors will be invited to make corn husk dolls, a frontier favorite of both Europeans and Natives as well as reusing a byproduct of food!
Note: September 12 will be SCOUT DAY for registered Troops only.
