About the book

While there are many books that attempt to teach people how to act, there are few that show aspiring actors what it takes to succeed as a working professional.

Second Edition- The Professional Actor’s Handbook: From Casting Call to Curtain Call -provides struggling artists—stage and screen actors, dancers, singers—with strategies that will help them successfully negotiate every stage of their careers. This second edition provides vital updates to reflect the current industry:

  • Post-pandemic shifts in the industry
  • Inclusive language
  • Additional resources specific to various affinity groups
  • Video auditions and self-tapes, including strategies for online auditions

Julio Agustin and Kathleen Potts address a myriad of topics such as resumes, headshots, rep books, audition nerves, and marketing plans. Other strategies address how to network, how to finance your early career, and even how to organize a home studio.

About the authors

Julio Agustin (he/él/theirs) is a seasoned Broadway performer known for featured roles in Chicago and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. He's also an accomplished director-choreographer, specializing in Radical Inclusivity. Julio's work has garnered award nominations and has been staged at theaters across the country. He teaches Transition Workshops and is a writer of two musicals. Julio holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Florida State University and an M.F.A. in Directing from Pennsylvania State University. He's a member of professional organizations including the Society of Directors and Choreographers and Actor's Equity Association.

Kathleen Potts (she/her/hers) is an accomplished playwright, dramaturge, and academic, recognized for her award-winning work. Her New York festival credits include Miss Nowhere Diner and F.H.O.D.O.M. She has also done dramaturgical work for productions such as Comfort Women: A New Musical and The Illusion of Love. Kathleen holds degrees from the University of Southern Maine, Columbia University, and The Graduate Center, CUNY. She is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and co-founder of Crossways Theatre, a multicultural community theater company. As an Associate Professor at The City College of New York, CUNY, Kathleen has received recognition for her teaching excellence.

Casey Miko is a versatile actor, singer, and NYC-based acting/audition coach. With off-Broadway credits including I Love a Piano and regional theater performances at acclaimed venues like Long Wharf Theatre and White Plains Performing Arts Center, Casey's talent extends across various platforms. Additionally, Casey has appeared in national commercials. Graduating from Western Connecticut State University with degrees in Musical Theater and Design/Tech, Casey further honed her craft at the T. Schreiber Studio under renowned teachers like Terry Schreiber and Betty Buckley. In 2017, Casey co-founded the Musical Theatre Mastermind Program, and more recently, the Musical Theatre Accelerator Program, guiding aspiring performers toward elite performance degree programs. Through her coaching, Casey has assisted numerous students in refining their audition and performance skills for the professional realm.
