Join us for the Chicago presentation of Searching for Augusta Savage, the new documentary on visionary artist, educator, and leader Augusta Savage. Savage was a leading figure during the Harlem Renaissance and beyond. The documentary offers an introduction to her life and practice.

Following the screening, filmmaker Charlotte Mangin and art historian and curator, Dr. Jeffreen M. Hayes, who is also the narrator and host for the film, will be conversation about Savage, her life and the filmmaking process. After the conversation, join us for a reception in the Ames Auditorium.

The short documentary is part of American Masters Shorts, a new PBS digital series. Searching for Augusta Savage is produced, written, and directed by Audacious Women Productions’ Charlotte Mangin and Sandy Rattley.

Acompáñenos en la premier en Chicago de Buscando a Augusta Savage (Searching for Augusta Savage), el nuevo documental sobre la artista visionaria, educadora y líder, Augusta Savage. Savage fue una figura principal de el Harlem Renaissance y ayudó a establecer un modelo de educación de las artes, recaudando fondos para el Centro de Arte comunitario Southside. Searching for Augusta Savage

Sandra Rattley has over 40 years experience leading and launching multimedia projects, such as Searching for Augusta Savage, and Unladylike2020, an animated women’s history series which has reached an audience of over 6 million. Rattley is the former VP for Cultural Programming at NPR where she launched the weekly show, Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me. She was executive producer for two Peabody Award winning series documenting 200 years of African American gospel music, and the making of jazz. With Charlotte Mangin, she is co-founder of Audacious Women Productions.

Searching for Augusta Savage

Charlotte Mangin is a documentary filmmaker with over 20 years experience in multimedia storytelling, creating Searching for Augusta Savage, and the animated documentary series Unladylike2020. She worked for National Geographic Television & Film reporting from the jungles of the Amazon to the Himalayan Mountains. Mangin produced a dozen documentaries for PBS’s international affairs series Wide Angle. Mangin was nominated for 4 Emmy Awards for Pioneers of Thirteen, a 6-hour series commemorating WNET/THIRTEEN’s 50th anniversary. She is currently Executive Producer for a new digital series titled Renegades, about how historical figures with disabilities have transformed America.


Jeffreen M. Hayes, Ph.D., Narrator, Host and Content Consultant

Art historian, curator and Executive Director of Threewalls

Jeffreen M. Hayes is the curator of the exhibition Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman and executive director of the non-profit Threewalls that fosters contemporary and socially-engaged art practices that respond to lived experiences. She serves as host and narrator of Searching for Augusta Savage. Dr. Hayes also speaks and writes about art history, Black art, and arts activism. Her writing can be found in several independent online print art publications as well as edited museum publications. Some of her books include Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman, AfriCOBRA: Messages to the People, and Etched in Collective History. She earned a Ph.D. in American Studies from the College of William and Mary, an M.A. in art history from Howard University, and a B.A. from Florida International University in humanities.

Sandra Rattley tiene más de 40 años de experiencia dirigiendo y lanzando proyectos multimedia como Searching for Augusta Savage y Unladylike2020, una serie animada sobre la historia de las mujeres, la cual ha alcanzado una audiencia de más de 6 millones. Rattley es la anterior Vicepresidenta de la Programación Cultural de NPR, donde lanzó el programa semanal Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me. Fue la productora ejecutiva de la serie ganadora de dos premios Peabody, la cual documenta 200 años de la música gospel afroamericana y el nacimiento del jazz. Junto con Charlotte Mangin fundó Audacious Women Productions.

Ella contribuye como presentadora y narradora de Searching for Augusta Savage. La Doctora Hayes también habla y escribe sobre historia del arte, arte Negro y activismo en el arte. Sus escritos se pueden encontrar en varias publicaciones independientes en línea e impresas, así como en publicaciones de museos. Algunos de sus libros incluyen Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman, AfriCOBRA: Messages to the People y Etched in Collective History.
