Every spring, thousands of rhinoceros auklets return to Destruction Island off Washington’s coast, where they have become an unlikely but vital indicator for the health of the Pacific Ocean. Wagner joins researchers tracking these seabirds to understand what their fates reveal about a changing ocean — one that supports salmon, whales, and countless other species, including us. Weaving together natural history, marine science, and Pacific Northwest storytelling, Seabirds as Sentinels is essential reading for anyone who cares about the waters and wildlife of our region.
