Discover the fascinating fish of the Whangārei Harbour with marine conservationist Samara Nicholas (MNZM), Director of Mountains to Sea. Explore the incredible diversity of our local waters, including:
• 26 species of Triplefins
• Sponge garden habitats
• The remarkable nudibranchs
• Whitebait or Inanga
Did you know that triplefins are as iconic among New Zealand fishes as wētā are among insects and kiwi among birds?
The day begins with an engaging one-hour talk, followed by hands-on creative exploration in our Activity Centre.
Art Activation: Make Your Own Moving Fish
After the talk, families will create collage fish inspired by the species of the harbour. Participants can then bring their creations to life through a simple stop-motion video experience — where a sequence of photos creates the illusion of movement.
This is a free, family-friendly event celebrating creativity, marine life, and Seaweek.
