Program: Dr. W. Carter Johnson presents “Ecology of the Dakota Landscapes: Past, Present, and Future”
W. Carter Johnson is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Ecology, South Dakota State University. He received his B.S. from Augustana and his Ph.D. from North Dakota State University. Dr. Carter’s research has focused on the Missouri River, prairie restoration, landscape ecology and the effects of climate change on wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region. He has earned national awards from the Environmental Law Institute and the Ecological Society of America.
His book Ecology of the Dakota Landscapes: Past, Present, and Future (2022), co-authored with Dennis Knight, has received high praise for weaving together “a remarkable tapestry of the human and natural history of the Dakotas.” The book covers a vast period of time from geological developments millions of years ago, to the effects of glaciers, the role of Native Americans and Euro-American settlers, and the effects climate change will have on the region in coming decades.
Dr. Johnson will present several vignettes from the topics covered in his book.
