Ahead of the Grand Sumo Tournament at the Royal Albert Hall this October, Japan House London is showing special screenings of the 2020 documentary Sumodo: The Successors of Samurai. Over six months in the making, this documentary goes inside the training stables of two sumo wrestlers Sakaigawa-beya and Takadagawa-beya.
The film captures the gruelling discipline of early-morning practice, the surprising details of daily life, the unshakable ties between wrestlers and their masters and the raw intensity of tournament battles. Centred on in-depth interviews with wrestlers and stablemasters, Sumodo: The Successors of Samurai offers rare personal perspectives on the enduring spirit and profound depth of sumo.
These screenings are organized in partnership with The Japan Foundation.
