About this Event

On Monday, 16th June 2025, SOAS Library will host a special screening of rites, a powerful short documentary exploring loss, resilience, and the journey of remembrance.

When Filipino migrant worker Rosalito Carpio passed away, his son Alvin was just nine years old. Twenty-five years later, Alvin embarks on a deeply personal journey from England to the Philippines, searching for answers about his father’s life. He organizes a memorial service and delivers a eulogy—finally speaking the words he could not say as a child.

This 15-minute documentary is a moving reflection on grief, identity, and the importance of documenting family histories.

About the Director:

Alvin Carpio, a SOAS alumnus (BA History & Politics, 2006-2009), was the first in his family to graduate. His career in campaigning and policy work led to significant social impact, including securing living wages for people in poverty and achieving legislative change for at-risk young people. He was recognized on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for his work.

Alvin has openly shared that SOAS was the first place he sought therapy—a pivotal step in understanding his past to build a better future.

Why attend?

• Watch an exclusive UK screening of rites (15 min run-time).

• Join a moderated Q&A with the director, exploring themes of grief, bereavement, mental health, and family history.

• Connect with fellow students, staff, and the wider SOAS community in an evening of reflection and conversation.

This screening takes place one day after Father’s Day, offering a unique opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue about love, loss, and remembrance.

This event is part of a one-time-only UK tour in June & July 2025. Seats are limited—reserve your spot now!
