‘A WILD AND CRAZY LOVE STORY’
An underseen and underappreciated part of David Lynch’s filmography, Wild At Heart is a sexy, violent, and surreal road movie deserving of cult status. It controversially won the Palme d’Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival, and was met with mixed reviews and a ‘poor’ box office performance upon theatrical release, but it is – in the opinion of SCREAM 8’s founders – a wild and unforgettable ride.
The film follows Nicholas Cage and Laura Dern as Sailor Fortune and Lula Ripley, two lovers on the run and on the road. With bright plans to start a new life away from Lula’s controlling and disapproving mother, they head down the highway to California, where they encounter a series of surreal characters and misadventures – while being unknowingly followed by a group of hitmen. Full of references to The Wizard of Oz, Elvis Presley, and featuring a lot of the Twin Peaks cast, Wild at Heart is Lynch at his most punk, most bloody, and most romantic.
