Join us for a unique concert with our 85-Voice Choir with orchestra. Scott Perkins’ A New England Requiem pairs texts from the Requiem Mass with poems by New England authors: Emily Dickinson and Nathaniel Hawthorne of Massachusetts, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow of Maine, and Lydia Sigourney of Connecticut. It explores themes of rest and peace for the departed and comfort for the living. Felix Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise was written to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the invention of the Gutenberg movable type printing system (invented in 1450). This led to the printing of the Gutenberg Bible, an important part of the Lutheran Reformation making the Bible more readily available to people in their vernacular language. Hymn of Praise uses Psalm 150 (“All that has life and breath, praise ye the Lord!”) as its text set to uplifting music.
