For our June Science Café, we are honored to welcome Susanne Paola Antonetta as we uncover the forgotten history of eugenics and examine how its legacy continues to shape present-day mental health practices and political narratives in the United States.
In 1939, the eugenics movement reached one of its darkest moments under Nazi Germany’s Aktion T4 program. Psychiatric institutions—once meant for care—were transformed into sites of systematic killing. Tens of thousands of lives, primarily individuals with neuropsychiatric conditions, were taken, laying the groundwork for the atrocities of the Holocaust.
Through this powerful conversation, we will reflect on how history continues to echo in modern systems—and how we can move toward a more ethical, compassionate future in mental health care.
