A program in two halves, led by internationally renowned violist and SPCO Artistic Partner Tabea Zimmermann. At the heart of the concert is Sally Beamish’s viola concerto “The Seafarer”, written in memory of conductor David Shallon and dedicated to Zimmermann herself, who first gave its world premiere in 2002. This concerto is, in fact, the third part in Beamish’s "Seafarer" trilogy, inspired by a 9th-century Anglo-Saxon poem of the same name. Like a tumultuous voyage at sea, in the ebb and flow of this soundscape, the rich voice of the viola delves beneath the heavily textured surface of the orchestra, while soaring above in fleeting moments of peace. The high-energy drama of Schubert’s Second Symphony encompasses the second half of the program as the momentum of the central theme propels the full orchestra through four movements, each as exuberant as the last.
