Birdsong has inspired composers for centuries. This program traces that fascination from the Renaissance to today, pairing early madrigals with modern choral works that evoke the beauty, energy, and mystery of birdsong. In Le Chant des Oyseaux, Janequin paints a vivid early example of bird calls brought to life in song. Wert’s Vezzosi augelli depicts birds merrily singing in a verdant garden. Stephen Chatman’s Chickadee and Woodpecker capture the distinctive vocal tones and tapping of birds with lively rhythmic patterns and playful vocal motifs.
Celebrate the spring with an evening of music that reflects how composers across time have heard and reimagined the voices of birds, with works by William Byrd, Claudio Monteverdi, Thomas Morley, and more.
