Join us for the second Scarlett Sabet Curates event at The Social on Monday 5th June for an evening of poetry with Salena Godden, Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa, Yomi Ṣode, Oakley Flanagan, Rishi Dastidar and Scarlett herself.

This event will start at 7pm with readings commencing at 7:30pm. Pamphlets and publications from the performing poets will be available to purchase on the night. The Social welcomes anyone who may have accessibility needs, however they are unfortunately unable to host wheelchairs users in the downstairs venue space.


About the Poets


Scarlett Sabet is a poet and writer, hailed by The Telegaph as ‘a rising star in the world of poetry’, known for her emotive performances and captivating stage presence. In 2022 alone she performed at Hay Festival with Dylan Jones and Jimmy Page, Cheltenham Literary Festival alongside Geoff Dyer, the Library of Congress in Washington D.C, at Keats’ House with Simon Armitage and Hannah Sullivan, and at Lowell (US) for the Kerouac Centenary Festival. Building a devoted following and considerable international press interest off the back of her four poetry collections, and the 2020 spoken word album Catalyst, produced by Jimmy Page, Scarlett is fast becoming one of contemporary poetry's most exciting new poets.

Salena Godden FRSL is an award-winning author, poet and broadcaster of Jamaican-mixed heritage based in London. Her debut novel Mrs Death Misses Death won the Indie Book Award for Fiction and the People’s Book Prize, and was shortlisted for the British Book Awards and the Gordon Burn Prize. Film and TV rights for Mrs Death Misses Death have been optioned by Idris Elba’s production company Green Door Pictures. Her work has been widely anthologised and broadcast on radio, TV and film. She was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2022. A new edition of Pessimism is for Lightweights - 30 Pieces of Courage and Resistance was published by Rough Trade Books in February 2023. The poem Pessimism is for Lightweights is on permanent display at The Peoples History Museum, Manchester.

Godden has signed a three-book deal with Canongate: She is currently working on a literary memoir, a new full poetry collection and an eagerly anticipated second novel set in the Mrs Death Misses Death universe - all three books are due for publication in 2024 and 2025.

Safiya Kamaria Kinshasa is a British-born Barbadian raised choreo-poet and PhD student at the University of Leeds in Cultural Studies. Her interdisciplinary art, braids dance and poetry on the page and stage. Safiya is an Obsidian Foundation fellow and an Apples & Snakes / Jerwood Arts Poetry in Performance recipient. Her work has appeared in a variety of journals including Poetry London, Poetry Review and Wasafiri.

Her debut poetry collection Cane, Corn & Gully (Out-Spoken Press) arrived in November 2022. Cane, Corn & Gully was shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize and won Barbados’ People’s Choice Book of The Year Award.

Yomi Ṣode is an award-winning Nigerian British writer. His debut collection Manorism, published by Penguin in October 2022 alongside a stage adaptation at the Southbank Centre, was shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize 2023 and the T S Eliot Prize 2022. He was shortlisted for the Brunel International African Poetry Prize 2021 and received the Jerwood Compton Poetry Fellowship in 2019. Yomi's acclaimed one-man show COAT toured nationally to sold-out audiences, including at the Brighton Festival, Roundhouse Camden and the Battersea Arts Centre. In 2020, his libretto Remnants, written in collaboration with award-winning composer James B. Wilson and performed with Chineke! Orchestra premiered on BBC Radio 3.

In 2021, his play and breathe... premiered at the Almeida Theatre to rave reviews. Yomi is a Complete Works alumnus and a member of Malika's Poetry Kitchen. He is the founder of BoxedIn, First Five, The Daddy Diaries and mentorship programme 12 in 12.

Oakley Flanagan is a writer and poet from the West Midlands, by way of Ireland. As a playwright: This Queer House (VAULT Festival, dir. Masha Kevinovna, produced by OPIA Collective). Their poetry appears in bath magg, Poetry London, Poetry Review, The North, Under the Radar and Wasafiri. Flanagan is an alum of Roundhouse Poetry Collective and The London Library Emerging Writers Programme, and a current member of Southbank Centre's New Poets Collective. They are a winner of the ruth weiss Emerging Poet Award 2022. Flanagan’s pamphlet-length poem, G&T, is published by Out-Spoken Press.


Rishi Dastidar is a fellow of The Complete Works, and a consulting editor at The Rialto magazine. A poem from his debut Ticker-tape was included in The Forward Book of Poetry 2018. A pamphlet, the break of a wave, was published by Offord Road Books in 2019, and a second book, Saffron Jack, was published in 2020. He is editor of The Craft: A Guide to Making Poetry Happen in the 21st Century, and also co-editor of Too Young, Too Loud, Too Different: Poems from Malika’s Poetry Kitchen (Corsair). His third collection, Neptune’s Projects, is published by Nine Arches Press.
