About this Event

Dates: Saturday, Oct 4, 9:30 am–4 pm. Sales end: Sep 27, 11pm. Ticket: $75. Instructor: Pat Maley, Master Spinner and Fiber Artist. Materials fee: $20. Skills Needed: no special skills. Class Limit: 10. Class Location: 1stFloor. Student Age: 18 and older.

The class will start with Sashiko (little stab) basics: materials, stitching, and needle handling. We will cover the three major types of SASHIKO:

  • MOYOUZASHI and BOROSASHI - patterned sashiko, uses lines, curves, and fabric pieces to make nature based designs for new items.
  • HITOMESASHI - one stitch sashiko, a technique that uses a lines of stitches -vertical, horizontal or diagonal. As the lines are stitched a pattern emerges.
  • KOGINSASHI- counted sashiko, symmetrical designs using color.

All use the basic stitching and needle technique.

You will make several squares that can be made into various end pieces - wall hanging, kinchaku (small) bag, mug rugs or pot holders or ornaments.

Variations of sashiko- kugurisashi, hishisashi will be demonstrated and discussed.

You will learn how to transfer patterns, and cut stencils and use sashiko for modern mending.

You will receive some patterns in your materials.

Supplies to Bring:

  • small sharp scissors,
  • a needle threader.
  • 6” or longer ruler,
  • a light color washable marking pen or pencil.
  • A palm thimble if you have it
  • Sashiko needles if you have them and a variety of hand needles with long eyes ( don’t buy any, you will have a couple in the materials you receive.
  • Optional: If you have scraps of embroidery thread ( those half used skeins or foot long pieces) bring them to use to or trade, also scraps of quilt fabric no bigger than 1” X 8”. You will receive an email with additional instructions before class.
  • $20 materials fee payable to the instructor at start of class. Cash or check only accepted.
  • Bring your lunch and drinks, there won’t be time to go out.

Pat has been spinning and weaving since the late 1960’s. She has been certified by Handweavers Guild of America as a Master Spinner, having completed both levels of the program. She frequently demonstrates spinning, weaving and dyeing at historical venues and pioneer festivals. She has been teaching all types of spinning at the Weaver’s Guild since the late 1980’s.

If you are not feeling well, please contact the instructor instead of coming to the class. On a case-by-case basis, we may be able to reschedule you into a future class or provide a make-up lesson. Ticket fees are not normally refunded.

Depending on the CDC Guidelines for Hamilton County at the time the class is held, a mask may be required. If so, you will be notified before the first class.

Unless specifically stated, Weavers Guild classes are designed for ages 18 and above. On a case-by-case basis, a minor may be permitted to register for a class but must be accompanied by a registered adult who agrees to assist the minor during the class. Contact the Education Committee Chair at [email protected] for permission before registering any minor in a class.

Fees are non-refundable. Your fee will only be refunded if the class is canceled or changed to a different date. Three registrations are required for a class to be held. Students will be notified before the start date if a class is canceled due to an insufficient number of students. Eventbrite processing and credit card payment fees will not be refunded if a student cancels for any reason.
