Jacob Jones and Blake Kennedy have partnered together on research that explores that junction. Utilizing local North Carolina clay and advanced imaging technology in concert with traditional studio ceramics processes, they have recorded the complexities of ceramic materials on the microscopic level. The methods include advanced sample preparation using diamond wire saws, iterative polishing, sputtered nanoscale coatings, and imaging using scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy to characterize chemistry. The resulting images are both scientific data and visual art. This presentation will explain their research, share their findings and discuss how this project has influenced their approach to education.
