About this Event
NYC singer-songwriter Sami Stevens harnesses Jazz, Soul, and Folk influences to create truly intimate original music. In writing songs, singing and accompanying herself on keys, she delivers dynamic, personal performances deeply steeped in the lineage of the great American singer-songwriters of the 60’s and 70’s. For this show, Sami will also feature acclaimed tenor saxophonist and long time collaborator Kazemde George. Kaz's latest release, which features Sami, is 'I Insist' on Greenleaf Records. Downbeat gave it four stars, calling it "...an insistence of music as not simply technical proficiency, but as a spiritual plane to consider what is at stake in imagining and remembering who we are."
In 2023, Sami released her debut solo album ‘Morning’ on Sunnyside Records. Born from a love of classic American music and an ear for storytelling, ‘Morning’ showcases Stevens’ rich vocal delivery as it ebbs between intimate personal stories and stunning symphonic textures, treating the vastness of the human condition with painterly impressions and an empathetic disposition. Glide Magazine wrote “Sami Stevens did more than impress with her first solo outing, she quickly established herself as one of the most promising songwriters to appear in the past few years.”

Based out of Charlotte, NC, Mariah van Kleef and her band present a surreal blend of gritty, global, and mythic influences from near and far: dreamy, shapeshifting noir rock with elements of bossa nova, nordic influence, and a little middle eastern groove. On lead guitar, Jason Cline. J. Scriven on percussion. Korey Dudley on upright bass. They add marked levels of potency to van Kleef’s ‘siren-esque’ songwork, luring you deeper into hypnotic territory. Queen City Nerve writes that Van Kleef's sound "...exudes a familiar yet alien beauty."
