About this Event

Kia ora!

Salmonella Dub 1993 original Line up - Dave Deakins, Mark Tyler, Andrew Penman, Pete Wood &- ALIVE together for the first time in 15 years. Fresh off the Twominds Festival stage - The originators  are back in the studio rehearsing an epic Dub n Bass set with featured guests  - Salmonella Dub influencer - Beat Rhythm Fashion’s Nino Birch & Ngāi Tūhoe soulmate & Soul Funk Jazz diva Whirimako Back.

Word from Andrew

“We are bringing a big 3hr bag of Dub magic - representing with the full live band original circa 1993 line up + the Salmonella Dub SoudSystem Ft. The Mighty Asterix & in support Lady J’s ska new wave Kiwi music set to warm the garden up. Can’t wait for our return to the Playhouse- it’s our debut  show introducing Whirimako Black & Nino Birch in Dub n Bass. “

“We’ve finally finished remastering our 14hr  Back Catalogue ‍  ‍- it’s been a ruff couple of years for whanau - We’re now completely broke but we are by no means completely broken. Still hopeful peps might wanna go out - even more hopeful a few may be able to give a little and invest in our vinyl

“So cool Nino is joining us!! We used to listen to Beat Rhythm Fashion on RDU in the 4th form.  Damned auspicious that Nino is now joining us Live on stage - especially as it’s at same time Pete Wood has returned. The FREAK LOCALS unite -  There’s a finished album with Whiri which by accident also includes tracks with Nino.  The releases that come with the next shows are closure on a recording process that started with Pete  back in 2012. We gave 3 of those tracks Nino to  work on after the WHO SNUBBED WHO ? Stuff went viral.  It was the least we could do to uphold the Beat Rhythm Fashion mana.

The thing is I never turned down that Legacy award - I’d let Recorded NZ Music know that mum said I should accept it graciously and they knew that was our intent. There’s a fair bit of mahi involved including getting leave from day jobs, preparing an historic show reel, selecting and prepping a band who had been influential to represent with a track. It was 6 weeks before the awards when I was told that Beat Rhythm Fashion weren’t worthy to perform Drifting. When I pushed for the reason why? - I was told the show producers deemed BRF unsuitable for the “shows” demographic. So I had to ask the question - “Whose show is it?”Aren’t you peps the music award show producers?

Nope - turned out the NZ Vodafone 2017 Music Awards in the Spark Arena had been sold to a failing TV3 media company with no knowledge of Aotearoa Music History. They didn’t know who Beat Rhythm Fashion were - didn’t care that - Verlaine/Chills/Cinnamon Girls  & Greg Bainbridge - Bilders/ riddum section.

It all worked out for the better in the end - Mum says I did the right thing - we got to wrote 3 epic tracks with Nino World She Waits Shaping Ground  & Andy’s Jam - became We’ve got this Gift - Never too late - You wanna take the long way not the wrong way home.

Not to mention Nino’s lyric “Your house will fall with it’s halls of separation” quietly became reality.  Hat’s off to NZ Recorded Music for getting rid of the Red Carpet the following year. “

The real story is in the Spin Off ‘s article .
