Ride with us along the Central Valley Greenway to spot salmon returning to Still Creek at the end of their great migration from the Pacific.
About this Event

Bring your bike, your warm riding gear, your best salmon costume, and meet other riders as we seek out returning salmon together!

Ride with us along the Central Valley Greenway to spot salmon returning to Still Creek at the end of their great migration back from the Pacific. The ride will travel from Rupert and Grandview to the west end of Burnaby Lake, stopping at 8 Creek look-out points along the way.

All riders and abilities are welcome to join us along this relatively flat bike route.

Hot drinks will be provided!



Summary of Logistics
  • Date: Sunday, November 2, 2024
  • Time: 1:30 - 3:30 PM
  • Location: We will ride primarily along the Central Valley Greenway Bike Route from Rupert St to the West end of Burnaby Lake.
  • Starting Point:
  • Final destination: at Burnaby Lake, then return with the group to Beaver Pondering Lodging, or make your own way home (Sperling Skytrain Station is a 3-minute ride/6-minute walk from the route at Burnaby Lake)



Weather

In case of extreme weather the ride date may be changed. Registered folks will be updated about the new date via email.



Schedule
  • 1:30 PM: Gathering ourselves, introductions, optional photos.
  • 1:40 PM: Ride begins along the Central Valley Greenway Bike Route. We will be riding for approximately 1 hour, making stops along the way.
  • 2:30 PM: Arrive at Chief Crossing Bridge for snacks, warm drinks, and an informal salmon & Still Creek Q & A.
  • 3:30 PM: Choose between returning on your own (Sperling Skytrain Station is very closeby), or returning westward with the group back toward the starting location.
  • 4:00 PM: Arrive back at starting location.

The cycling route is in blue, with stars showing the places that we will pause to look for salmon.

Details
  • All riders and abilities are welcome but please consider whether your fitness level will allow you to comfortably complete the route, which is 6.1 km each way; We will aim to have designated Ride Leaders for different paces of travel such as a kids/slow pace and an adult moderate pace, as well as sweep bringing up the rear of the ride. Google Maps considers this route to be a 25-minute ride each way, but we will travel more slowly in order to stop and look for salmon and to accommodate slower riders.
  • Kids with their own bikes are welcome with adult supervision
  • There will be snacks, herbal tea, and hot chocolate available by donation at the West end of Burnaby Lake, which is the final outbound destination for the ride. (Hot chocolate contains milk ingredients)
  • Salmon costumes and salmon colours are encouraged. Red and green for classic sockeye, or green and purple for Still Creek's .
  • Please dress warmly, and bring gloves and rain gear in case of showers.
  • Please wear comfortable layered biking attire
  • Please wear a helmet, and equip yourself with a headlight and rear light for your bicycle. Sunset is at 4:47 PM, so the return ride will be by twilight. Safety first!
  • Bring a reusable drinking mug for hot chocolate/tea



The Route's Accessibility
  • The route is 6.1 km one way and is 95% on separated bike lanes or bike paths with several road crossings. The route is level terrain which slopes very gently downhill heading eastand gently uphill heading west.
  • The Central Valley Greenway route passes close to several Skytrain stations for those who might need to leave the ride early in either direction. Gilmore (4-minute walk / 2-minute ride from the route, mostly flat), Brentwood Town Centre (6-minute cycle / 13-minute walk from route, uphill), Holdom Station (12-min walk/4-min bike from the route, mostly flat)and Sperling/Burnaby Lake station (5-minute walk/ 3-minute ride from route). Bikes are:
  • Washrooms are available a 2-minute walk from the starting point (Superstore) and a 1-minute cycle/5-minute walk from the endpoint (at Bill Copeland Sports Centre).
