About this Event

Ikebana - the Japanese art of flower arranging - will help you focus on the natural beauty of your surroundings. This hands-on workshop will teach you the basic techniques of ikebana in an easy to understand way. Give yourself a break and treat yourself by creating your own unique, spring-themed arrangement. All supplies will be provided, no equipment or previous experience necessary.

Four different schools of ikebana will be featured in this workshop series. Select the school's fundamentals that speak most to you, or try your hand at all four to get a sampling of a variety of disciplines.

IKENOBO SCHOOL - [SOLD OUT] - Ikenobo is the origin of Ikebana with a history of more then 550 years. Nature shows a vast, harmonized world of beauty. Arranging flowers and finding beauty in flowers with reverence-these are linked to a heart that values nature and cares for other people. This is the spirit of Ikenobo Ikebana.

SOGETSU SCHOOL - [SOLD OUT] - The Sogetsu School of ikebana is one of the largest and most modern with its approach to technique, design, materials and outlook. Sogetsu practitioners are encouraged to use their individuality in their arrangements, by looking at their materials with fresh eyes. The connection of humans with nature brings a new life to materials that does not exist in the natural state, and this is the essence of Sogetsu ikebana.

OHARA SCHOOL - [SOLD OUT] - The Ohara School of ikebana incorporates the use of western flowers that had begun to be imported and cultivated in Japan in the mid-late 19th century. Unshin Ohara, founder of Ohara school developed a new style of arranging flowers, called "moribana", which was subequently adopted by most other ikebana schools and now has become mainstream in the ikebana world.

SANGETSU SCHOOL - [SOLD OUT] - The Sangetsu School of ikebana was established in 1972 in Atami, Japan. Two parts nature, one part technique is the motto of this school. Arranging naturally is the focus of Sangetsu, as well as four other guidelines which include harmony, arranging quickly, as if painting a picture, and arranging with joy.

A separate entry ticket will need to be purchased in order to attend the Sakura Days festival, but no Sakura Days ticket is required to attend ikebana workshops. Buy your festival tickets here! https://vcbf.tickit.ca/events/33685
