Through the alchemy of modern music, Far Mountain Ensemble reshapes verses forged in the harshest political winds—not merely the lamentations of disillusioned literati, but the luminous essence of the Chinese scholar-official spirit in its most dire moments.
Listen—the frozen Yellow River in Li Bai’s Hard Roads to Travel shatters into fearless defiance through the convulsions of avant-garde strings. The carefree resilience of Su Shi’s Calm in the Storm, where “a bamboo staff and straw sandals outmatch a fine steed,” takes flight in the improvisatory brilliance of a jazz trumpet, dancing through blues-infused rain. The evening bell in Wang Wei’s Passing by Xiangji Temple pierces the mist of electronic reverberations, as droplets simulated by electronic soundscapes inscribe Zen philosophy into the quantum age.
