Come together as One. Now is time - Batch Gueye

It is time we unite because we are all connected and influenced by one another.

Our team has a shared mission: to EDUCATE and EXPERIENCE the history and culture of West Africa and how these rhythms and dances have been passed from Africa to the wider diaspora.

The workshops are a series – if you want to get the most, in depth learning and experience, I recommend you sign up to all five.

The workshop series starts in my homeland – motherland Africa, Senegal. I was born and raised in a West-African Griot family in Senegal, I feel incredibly grateful to have such strong roots and knowledge of my tradition and the history of my people. This cultural connection has nourished me; giving me firm foundations to start a new life in Britain without forgetting the values that have shaped me. The Griot’s duty is to keep culture, bear news, tell stories, entertain and educate their people just as the many generations before them have done. The first workshop will focus on drumming, singing, story-telling and dancing to the traditional rhythm Baranbaye. Drumming with Dembis Thioung and Baye Ngom, Singing and story-telling with my mother (live video) and dancing with me, Batch Gueye.

The second workshop in the series will expand to wider West Africa – Guinea, with guest teachers Coumba Mbaye (Senegal) and Salif Camara (Guinea). This workshop will teach Sabar dance to the rhythm Dagan, using ladies styling from Coumba Mbaye, taught by me, Batch Gueye. Salif Camara will then teach traditional Guinean singing and dance to Soko rhythm. Live drumming with master drummers Dembis Thioung, Baye Ngom and Souleymane Compo.

The third workshop in the series will expand from Senegal, West Africa to Brasil, with guest teachers Irineu Noguiera and Adirano Oliveira. This workshop will be accompanied by live percussion with Dembis Thioing, Baye Ngom, Jon Hardeman, Mac Dende and Wagner Santos. We will explore the Sabar rhythm Thieboudienne, Afrobrasilian dance and Samba-Reggae. I love the Senegal-Brasil fusion – you do not want to miss this workshop, trust me!

The forth workshop in the Sabar Family series will connect Senegal, West Africa to AfriCaribbean contemporary styles. I will be teaching Sabar dance to Kaolak rhythm. International guest teacher Ofelia Balogun will be teaching experimental Africaribbean contemporary. This dance style explores the intersection between vocabulary originated from the African Diaspora in the Caribbean to the world and its connection with dance theatre and contemporary techniques. We will also create the space to improvise and explore our own movements. Live music with Dembis Thioung (on drums), Moussa Koroleko (on Kora) and myself (voice and drums).

The fifth workshop is all about the connection between Senegal and Afrobeats. When I listen to Afrobeats, I can still hear the rhythms from my country. I will be teaching Sabar dance to Fasse rhythm and we will then explore these rhythms within Afrobeats with guest teachers Eddie Boakye (Ghana) and FumyOpeyemi (Nigeria). I have not seen anyone do a Afrobeat-Sabar fusion with live drums before – this vibe blows my mind. Come join us!

And here is the best part – you will have the opportunity to be part of a performance team. We will be building choreographies over the weeks August-October, and will then be rehearsing these in November, in preparation for SABAR FAMILY FESTIVAL in December (Trinity Centre, Bristol). We will co-create a concert celebrating heritage, tradition and diversity. From a vocal choir to energetic rhythms, fiery percussion and dance to story-telling and colourful costumes; this promises to be an extraordinary event. You will be performing alongside your workshop teachers – Coumba Mbaye, Salif Camara, Adriano Oliveira, Ofelia Balogun, Eddie Boakye. I will also be bringing amazingly talented international artists – Group Assane Thiam (aka the 5 brothers). This is my dance troop in Senegal. We were dancing together since we were 8 years old and won many competitions in Senegal. Mor Ngom, Modou Ngom, Masse Gueye, Khamet Diol and master drummers Dawcomba Diop and Modou Thiam. These teachers will not just be performing with you, but also teaching a series of masterclasses over the whole weekend 2-4th December SABAR FAMILY FESTIVAL. We are bringing West Africa to Bristol.
