(3 30 PM to 5 30 PM on each day - 19, 20 and 21 Sep)
The moment B Jayashree, in a soaring voice, calls out to 'Karimayi' with a cry of "Tāyē......!", a jolt of lightning runs through the entire theatre, and the audience is instantly transported into a magical world. In 'Lakshapati Rajana Kathe,' the moment Jayashree begins the invocation "Shri Ganaraya..." in the Kinnari Jogerata style of North Karnataka, a magical world is created right there. From that point onwards, there is no reality but the play. Such is the incredible power of B. Jayashree's singing.
Music has always been an inseparable component of the Kannada theatre tradition. Even in the era of modern plays that rely a lot on dialogue, the allure of stage music has not waned. Performers on the professional stage were celebrated not just for their acting, but equally for their skill in singing. Whenever performers such as 'Nataka Shiromani' A.V. Varadacharya, 'Natashekhara' Mohammed Peer, 'Natakaratna' Gubbi Veeranna, 'Natabhushana' Basavaraja Mansur, performed, the audience, mesmerized by the masterful elaboration of notes, the ascensions and descensions of the scale, the swift taans, and the graceful vocal tremors in every single song, would invariably cry out 'Once More!'. In the era of modern drama, T. P. Kailasam's highly contemporary musical experiments represent a singularly unique development in the realm of theatrical music.
Here is a golden opportunity to delve into these fascinating stories and to learn theatre songs directly from the maestro B. Jayashree herself. Drawing from the rich treasure trove of her experience, she will narrate fascinating anecdotes and stories.
